AREAS OF PRACTICEStephen Walters was admitted as a solicitor in 1978. He has a background in Law Centres and in 1980 began to specialise in crime and mental health work. In 1983 he set up and ran, for ten years, a ‘niche’ criminal practice in North West London. He has a wealth of experience in all aspects of the criminal process, from the police station to the Court of Appeal and has over 25 years criminal advocacy experience. In 1994 Stephen became one of the first solicitors to gain Higher Rights of Audience and since then has practised exclusively as a trial advocate in the Crown Court. He has recently completed a 66 day drug supply trial and is briefed in 2008 to appear as leading or ‘senior’ junior counsel in cases involving prison disorder, and money laundering and DVD piracy. NOTABLE CASESStephen’s practice has for many years been of the ‘heavyweight’ variety, dealing principally with serious and complex fraud, murder, kidnapping, sex-trafficking, and other serious violence, public order, and drugs offences. He has recently led in a 9-month investment fraud (R. v M & ors), in a kidnapping trial (R. v H & ors), and in another banking fraud (R. v O & ors). He recently completed a high-profile murder case, and was the lead advocate for the first defendant in the successful defence of the Harmondsworth Prison Riot case.
