Advocate

Perren Buildings, London

AREAS OF ADVOCACY PRACTICE

Joan was admitted in 1995, already with extensive knowledge of the criminal justice system having worked previously for the probation service.

Following a period with Nottingham City Council, where she carried out statutory and regulatory work on behalf of the local authority, she joined the renowned civil liberties and criminal defence firm Fisher Meredith in 1997 handling a range of complex cases including homicide, sex offences, fraud, drug importation and people trafficking. Notably she successfully defended one of the Department of Work and Pension’s largest confiscation claims - £36 million.

Joan is a former partner at Fisher Meredith solicitors, leaving in 2005 to be a consultant and to concentrate solely on advocacy. In her first full year at Perren Buildings Joan was instructed in over fifty cases as sole advocate or junior advocate, including a range of fraud, violence, drugs and immigration cases.
