AREAS OF ADVOCACY PRACTICE

Linda Moreno joined Perren Buildings Chambers as an International Member in 2011.  There are few lawyers in America today who have participated successfully in more national security and terrorism charged cases. Linda represented Dr. Sami al-Arian, a Palestinian professor, in the case described as the seminal test of the Patriot Act in United States v. Sami Amin al-Arian, et al. After a 6-month trial, which garnered international attention, the jury refused, in a 53- count indictment, to return a single guilty verdict against Dr. al-Arian and acquitted him of several of the most serious charges. Ms. Moreno also represented the chairman of the board of the pre-eminent Muslim charity in America in both federal trials of United States vs. Holy Land Foundation, et al, in Dallas, Texas. She was the jury consultant in United States v. Jose Padilla, Adham Hassoun, et al, a case watched by human rights organizations around the world. She recently obtained acquittals for an Afghani client accused of leading a Taliban terrorist cell in California. Ms. Moreno was counsel in United States v. Aafia Siddiqui, United States v. Muthanna al Hanooti, and has been retained as lead counsel in United States v. Shaker al Masri. She has also been retained as a confidential consultant in numerous other high profile cases involving charges of terrorism.

She is part of the defense team that recently won a habeas petition in Mohamedou Salahi vs. Barack Obama, resulting in a decision ordering the immediate release of the Mauritanian prisoner from Guantanamo Bay after being tortured and detained for years.

In addition to her trial practice, she represents persons subpoenaed before grand juries around the country. Her expertise injury selection has led lawyers in complex, high profile cases to retain Ms. Moreno where she has contributed to surprising successes. For example, in the matter of the United States vs. Wesley Snipes, Ms. Moreno was retained as a jury consultant in a prosecution of the African American actor in a southern jurisdiction where race was an important issue in jury selection. Mr. Snipes was acquitted of all felonies. She was retained by Chevron Oil’s counsel as a consultant in Bowoto vs. Chevron, a controversial case in which the oil company prevailed in a wrongful death suit on international soil.

In the wake of the events of September 11, 2001, Ms. Moreno has lectured on civil liberties and terrorism prosecutions at various universities and institutions around the country, including the law schools at Columbia, Yale and the University of California. Recently, Ms. Moreno was invited to Oslo by the Norwegian Bar Association and the Nobel Peace Committee to address law students and members of Parliament.

Although based in Florida, Ms. Moreno represents clients around the United States. She is a member of the State Bars of California and Florida, and of the United States Supreme Court Bar, and admitted to practice before the United States District Courts for the Middle District of Florida, the Central and Southern Districts of California, the Eastern District of Michigan, as well as the U.S. Court of Appeals, First Circuit. She has represented clients pro hac vice before the United States District Courts for the Northern District of Texas, the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York, the Southern District of Florida, the Western District of Missouri and the Northern District of Illinois.

Ms. Moreno has appeared in the pages of the New York Times, Chicago Herald Tribune, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, Miami Herald, St. Petersburg Times, and the Tampa Tribune, as well as on NPR, BBC World, ABC, NBC, CBS, Democracy Now and Al Jazeera.

Ms. Moreno possesses a current Secret Security Clearance.
